By now it is well known that we spend our time indoors more often than outdoors. In fact, this percentage is
higher than ever before. 36% of our time is spent indoors, at a workplace. All the more important that this
workplace should be well equipped, as it has now become clear that our stay indoors can have a negative
effect on our health.
Our health can decline due to a lack of (natural) daylight. Indeed, natural daylight has a
beneficial effects on our visual, emotional and functional states. When there is a shortage of daylight, this
beneficial effect does not occur. Luckily for us, there are lighting solutions that can mimic daylight.
At Lumiparts, we have two, namely the Tunable White solution and recently also the BioUp solution
from Signify.
BioUp and Tunable White
Our Tunable White solution makes it possible to adjust the brightness level and colour temperature
with the time of day. After all, a white, or in this case cool light colour has a positive effect on
our body and functioning. The Tunable White modules allow the biological rhythm of our body
and mimic natural daylight. In addition, this process ensures that a person's
concentration level is evenly distributed throughout the day.
The BioUp technology adds to this. For instance, it enhances the LED spectrum with cyan light,
increasing the biological impact on the human body by about 42%. The improvement of the
cyan light (4000K, CRI>80, R9>50) ensures with its properties that there is no change between
the visual colour impression and the visual light output, so the imitation of the rhythm is even more natural.
Why choose BioUp or Tunable white lighting?
These lighting solutions actually lead back to one term: Melanopic light. Melanopic light is another
other word for natural, biological light. It plays an important role in synchronising the
internal body clock in accordance with the non-visual effects of light.
When melanopic lighting is deployed within a building, it brings the benefits of natural
daylight. This will improve visual comfort, well-being and performance. Melanopic
light has a direct relationship with light intensity, light-dark cycle (circadian rhythm) and the light spectrum.
Effect of Seratonin
Melanopic light also affects our serotonin levels. Serotonin is responsible for the production of
our happiness hormone. An imbalance of the happiness hormone may be reflected in a bad mood
and concentration problems, for example. Seratonine also activates the production of melatonin in our body,
which is necessary for a good night's sleep.
All the more important to think about this when choosing your lighting solution.
